Des Moines, IA (March 1, 2023) – ARAG Legal Insurance, a leader in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, is proud to partner with Drake University to sponsor the Chad Hensley Diversity Scholarship to a third-year law student. The scholarship honors Chad Hensley, the founder of Midwest Legal Services, an Iowa-based company that began administering legal insurance in the 1970s. The company grew into an industry leader and became a subsidiary of ARAG – the leading legal insurer worldwide. We’re excited to congratulate our 2023 recipient, Gloria Soto.
Gloria grew up in a home with two undocumented parents who encouraged her to pursue an education. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science and a minor in Sociology from the University of California San Diego, and she is currently in her third year of law school at Drake University.
While at Drake University, Gloria served on the executive board for the Drake Journal of Agricultural Law. She’s also active in Drake Law School’s Latino student organization, La Alianza, and serves as secretary. She has worked as an interpreter at the Drake Legal Clinic and Polk County Bar Association.
Gloria is working towards obtaining her Public Service Certificate, which requires her to complete 60 hours of legal services without compensation or academic credit.
Each week, Gloria volunteers at Disability Rights Iowa, an organization which provides free legal representation for individuals with disabilities and participates in legal clinics hosted by Drake Law School. She is involved with Youth Action Council, a group of young people who lead programs aimed at fighting homelessness.
Prior to attending law school, Gloria worked in special education law, where she learned about the services schools are required to provide students with disabilities.
Gloria hopes to use her law degree to ensure children with disabilities have access to everything they need in order to achieve their own academic goals.
